We sell packaging design, so one set of prices below is ours: the planning ranges our packaging page publishes. Every other price is another seller's public price, with a link and the date we read it. All of them are design fees; printing is a separate bill.

Packaging design gets quoted at a few hundred rupees and at a few lakh, and both quotes can be honest. One buys a file for one face of one product. The other buys a system that sells a range on a shelf, a phone screen and a delivery box, with artwork your printer can run without surprises. This guide shows what sits in each band, what a design quote leaves out, and how to get quotes you can compare.

How much does packaging design cost in India in 2026?#

These are the planning ranges on our packaging page, as of October 2026:

ScopePlanning range
Label or pack design for a single SKUTypically starts around ₹20,000 to ₹40,000
A full range system with structure, variants and rendersUsually ₹75,000 to ₹3 lakh
A bilingual Arabic and English pack for the GCCTypically from AED 2,500 per SKU

Public price lists sit lower and buy less. On 7 October 2026 we found 13 Indian sellers, most of them listed on IndiaMART or Fiverr, publishing rupee prices for packaging or label design, from ₹300 to ₹12,000 a design, piece or project. The full list, with what each says it includes, is further down.

Where a project lands inside a range depends on the number of SKUs, whether a new structure is needed, the languages, the renders and the rounds of changes. A Gulf pack also has its own labelling rules, covered in our guide to packaging for Kerala brands going to the Gulf.

For a sense of what a full launch system covers, here is Proteinuts, a peanut butter brand, as our project page lists the work: a logotype; a tub label system with flavour colour coding, a brand-green band for Pineapple Crunchy and a rich brown band for Dark Chocolate; product renders; truck livery; a billboard; and a product film. Its online store was a separate build, matched to the packaging system. Those are deliverables, not a price: we don't publish what any client paid.

Label, pouch, box or a full range: how do costs compare?#

The format changes how much there is to design, more than the product does.

  • A label for an existing container is the smallest job: one or two faces, a legal panel and a print file, on a jar or bottle you've already chosen.
  • A printed pouch is artwork from edge to edge, front, back and gussets, drawn on the converter's dieline and shaped by its print process, such as how many colours it runs and whether metallised film needs a white layer.
  • A folding carton has six faces and flaps. On a stock box it's artwork only; a custom structure adds structural design and a physical sample.
  • A range costs the hero design plus an adaptation for every other SKU and size. Each adaptation costs less than the hero because the system decides most of the layout, so a well-built range gets cheaper per SKU as it grows.

Our guide to product label design covers sizing labels for jars, bottles, tubs and pouches.

What isn't in a design quote?#

These lines surprise new brands after the design is signed off:

  • Printing and conversion. Your printer or converter quotes by quantity, material and process, plus one-time costs such as printing plates or gravure cylinders. Get a printer's quote early, because it can change the brief.
  • Barcodes. GS1 India is the only body authorised to issue barcodes starting with 890 in India. For 100 barcodes and annual sales up to ₹5 crore, its first year costs ₹50,200: a ₹27,000 registration fee, a ₹13,000 annual subscription, 18% GST on those two and a ₹3,000 refundable deposit (fee table effective 1 October 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Micro manufacturing enterprises can get up to 80% of the fees back for the first three years under the MSME barcode subsidy, to a maximum of ₹50,650 and on the 100 and 1,000 barcode plans only, GS1 India says (opens in a new tab).
  • Lab tests and the regulatory check. Nutrition values come from a lab report, and a food technologist or consultant should check the label against the rules in our FSSAI labelling checklist.
  • Trade mark filing. IP India charges an official fee (opens in a new tab) per class for each application; our guides to branding costs in India and brand guidelines give the current fees and when to file.
  • Photography, stock images and font licences, if the design uses them.
  • GST. Package and graphic design fall under SAC 998391, which the GST Council's explanatory notes (opens in a new tab) say covers "package design services". The rate is 18%: 9% central and 9% state GST, or 18% integrated GST between states, under entry 21 of Notification 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate) (opens in a new tab). The September 2025 rate changes reworded that entry without changing its rate.

What makes a quote go up or down?#

  • SKUs and sizes. Every variant and size is another layout to draw, check and proof.
  • Structure. Designing for a stock pouch or box costs less than designing a new shape.
  • Languages. A bilingual pack is designed in both scripts, with a native writer and reader, not translated at the end.
  • Renders. Photoreal renders for listings and launch ads take time, and they let you sell before stock is printed.
  • Rounds of changes, and how many people give feedback.
  • Legal inputs. Missing nutrition values or a changing formulation stall the artwork.
  • The deadline. A rushed timeline costs more almost everywhere.

Freelancer, contest site or agency: what do you get for the money?#

To show what the wider market charges, we looked for every Indian seller of packaging or label design that publishes a rupee price, on its own site or a marketplace listing. These are their prices as listed on 7 October 2026, in alphabetical order, with no verdict on anyone's work. We are one of the sellers in this market, but our own planning ranges are at the top of this guide, not in the table.

How we compiled this. On 7 October 2026 we looked for Indian sellers of packaging and label design that publish a rupee price: design firms' own price pages, design contest sites, Fiverr and IndiaMART catalogues. We checked 34 sellers and pages; the 13 above showed a rupee price on a page we could open that day. We left out general "market rate" articles, sellers outside India, pages that blocked us, and contest sites that price only in US dollars (Designhill's packaging contests start "from $499", for example). Prices, units and minimum orders are the sellers' own, and most listings don't say whether GST is included. Fiverr prices its gigs in US dollars and showed us its own conversion at about ₹101.28 to the dollar. Businesses are named and linked; a freelancer who sells under their own name is described instead, and listed last. A listing here is not a recommendation, and a seller left out is not a judgement. We re-check these prices every three months; the next check is due by 7 January 2027.

These prices aren't comparable line by line, because they buy different things. A low fixed price usually buys a design file for one face or one SKU, with a set number of concepts and revisions. A contest gives you many entries but little research, so check who owns the artwork at the end. An agency's price usually buys the audit, a system across SKUs, coordination with your printer and pre-press. Whoever you choose, ask to see packs that were actually printed, not just mock-ups.

How do you brief for an accurate quote?#

Send every designer the same brief, so their quotes cover the same scope. Our guide to the packaging design process has a brief template you can copy; for pricing, the rows that matter most are the SKU list with sizes and formats, the languages, your printer or converter, and the launch date. If the brand itself is new, its identity usually comes first, and our checklist for starting a food brand puts the pack in order with the licence and the store.

Frequently asked questions#

How much does a label design cost in India?#

On the public price lists of the 13 Indian sellers we checked on 7 October 2026, label and packaging design ran from ₹300 to ₹12,000 a design or project, usually for one design with a set number of revisions. Our packaging page's planning range for label or pack design for one SKU typically starts around ₹20,000 to ₹40,000. Compare what each price includes: concepts, revisions, the legal panel, print-ready files and proofing with your printer.

Is GST charged on packaging design?#

Yes, at 18%, when the designer is registered for GST. Package and graphic design fall under SAC 998391, taxed at 9% central plus 9% state GST, or 18% integrated GST between states; the September 2025 rate changes didn't alter it. Ask whether a quote includes GST.

Do we pay again for every flavour or size?#

Usually yes, but less. The hero design carries most of the cost, and each extra flavour or size is an adaptation on the same system, quoted per SKU. Agree in the quote how many SKUs are included and what an extra one costs.

Who owns the packaging artwork?#

Under India's Copyright Act, 1957 (opens in a new tab), the author of a work is its first owner unless an exception applies, and an assignment of copyright is valid only in writing, signed by the assignor (sections 17 and 19). If the assignment doesn't state its period, the Act deems it five years; if it doesn't state the territory, India. So ask for a written assignment of the final artwork for the full term of copyright and for every country, plus the editable source files.

Get a quote you can compare#
