We run Meta campaigns for businesses in Kerala and the Gulf, so we have a stake in this topic. Every change below links to Meta's own page or a dated report, so you can check it yourself.
If you advertise on Facebook and Instagram, the account you set up in 2024 now behaves differently. Some settings you relied on have gone, some reports count results in a new way, and the lever that matters most has moved from targeting to creative. This guide walks through what changed, in date order, and what we now do differently when we plan campaigns. If you are still deciding between platforms, our comparison of Meta and Google ads for Kerala businesses covers that first.
What changed in Meta ads between 2025 and 2026?#
Here are the changes that matter for a lead or sales advertiser, oldest first. Each one is dated from Meta or, where Meta's page could not be read, from a dated report.
Two things run through the whole table. Meta wants fewer, broader campaigns that its system can steer. And Meta's own reports now count fewer conversions than they did in 2025, by design.
Why does creative volume matter more now?#
Because the creative is now the targeting. When Meta built Andromeda, its engineers wrote that "the number of ads creatives in Meta's recommendation systems is expected to grow significantly" as advertisers adopted generative AI tools, and the system was designed to handle that growth. A year later, Meta's December 2025 guidance (opens in a new tab) explained what the system does with all those ads: it "groups together ads that share key visual and thematic attributes", so ads that look alike count as variations of one creative, and their learnings are shared.
That changes what "more creative" means. Ten versions of the same video with different captions are, to Meta, roughly one idea. Meta separates creative iteration (small A/B tweaks) from creative diversification (assets that are distinct "in their visuals, messaging, and formats") and recommends "a broad portfolio of assets that take more creative liberty across text, image, and video". Small businesses are following the advice with AI tools: on Meta's Q2 2026 earnings call (opens in a new tab) (29 Jul 2026), the company said over 9 million small businesses used at least one of its AI creative tools.
What does distinct look like for a Kerala business? For a builder, it might be four concepts: a walkthrough for families in Kozhikode, an investment angle for Keralites in Dubai, an EMI and price explainer, and a video of the site's location and access. A Malayalam and an English cut of the same video will probably look alike to the system, so treat them as one concept when you count.
We see the volume side of this every day. Kerala advertisers need a steady stream of new creatives: ReelsBuddy, a Marketlube company, has made 3,000+ videos so far (reported by our team), and its ERP counted 389 videos sold from 1 to 28 September 2026 alone. For Skymark Education, a study abroad consultancy, our team reports 60+ video creatives a month behind over ₹15 lakh of Meta ad spend. On 30 Sep 2026, Meta's public Ad Library listed 66 active ads from Skymark's page, 43 of them started that month. The Library shows Skymark's ads, not who made each one. What makes that volume work is that each video answers one different question: a country, a course or an intake.
Distinct openings pay even on the same budget. For Zealous Learning, a Kerala tuition brand, three hook videos launched on 5 Sep 2026 on almost the same budget brought 227, 198 and 38 enquiries by 4 Oct, at ₹36.74, ₹42.65 and ₹215.23 each (Meta's count). By our arithmetic, the strongest opening brought about six times the enquiries of the weakest for about the same money.
Our own planning rule, published on our performance page, is three to five angles per audience, with kill and scale thresholds agreed before launch. The number matters less than the spread: different buyers, different hooks and different formats. For how a new brand tests 10 to 20 creatives on a small budget, see how to sell FMCG products online.
Advantage+ or manual campaigns: what should a Kerala advertiser run?#
For most lead and sales campaigns in 2026, start with Advantage+ on, then add only the limits your business really has.
Meta has made Advantage+ the default, and it is now a very large business: its "Advantage+ end-to-end solutions" passed a $75 billion annual revenue run-rate, according to the Q2 2026 call. The same call gave an Indian example. Underneat, an online apparel brand that had been setting up every campaign by hand, moved to Advantage+ sales campaigns with Advantage+ audience, placements and budget, and saw a 13% incremental lift in purchases and a 16% rise in add-to-cart conversions. That is Meta's own case, so read it as what is possible, not what is typical.
For lead campaigns, Meta's Advantage+ leads page (opens in a new tab) (read 4 Oct 2026) sets out what keeps a campaign "On":
- Budget: Advantage+ campaign budget stays on.
- Audience: at least one ad set uses Advantage+ audience, with ages 18 and up, any location or language, and only custom audience exclusions.
- Placements: Advantage+ placements, so every placement is selected.
Narrowing too far switches the campaign to Advantage+ Off. Meta's page claims leads campaigns with Advantage+ on delivered 14% lower cost per lead and 10% lower cost per qualified lead on average. Those are Meta's own figures, and the page doesn't show how they were measured.
What does this mean in practice for a business in Kerala?
- Keep real constraints. A clinic in Kozhikode can't serve a patient in Kollam, so set the location. A campaign for Gulf NRIs needs its own country targeting and WhatsApp replies during Gulf hours. Location and language don't switch Advantage+ off.
- Use audience inputs as suggestions. Past enquirers, customer lists and interests can guide delivery without hard limits.
- Consolidate. One campaign with enough budget to learn beats four small ones. This matters more in Kerala, where audiences are smaller than in a metro and tire of an ad sooner.
- Judge on your CRM, not on Meta's dashboard. Automation finds whoever is most likely to fill a form. Only your sales data shows whether those people buy.
Manual control still earns its place when a campaign must reach a narrow audience Meta keeps missing, such as one profession or one locality. Test it against an Advantage+ version and let the cost per qualified lead decide.
Boost post or Ads Manager: when is a boost enough?#
A boost is enough when the goal is reach or engagement on a post that already works. For leads and sales, use Ads Manager.
Meta's own help article, The difference between boosted posts and Meta ads (opens in a new tab) (read 4 Oct 2026), says boosted posts "don't have as many customization and detailed targeting options as a traditional Meta ad". Boosts focus on goals such as more messages, website clicks, Page engagement and local business promotion. Ads Manager adds objectives such as leads, app promotion and sales, and Meta notes that "campaign creation, budget settings and performance metrics are only available in Ads Manager".
One cost is easy to miss. The same Meta article warns that "in most regions, an Apple service fee of 30% of your total ad payment" may apply when you add funds to your ad account in the Instagram app on an iPhone. If you boost from an iPhone, add funds from a browser or run the ad from Ads Manager instead.
What happened to targeting exclusions and attribution?#
Exclusions. In January 2025 Meta announced the removal of detailed targeting exclusions, citing its finding that "the median Cost per Conversion was 22.6% lower" without them. New ad sets can't exclude interests or behaviours, and campaigns that already had exclusions keep running only until they are edited. You can still exclude custom audiences, such as an existing customer list or people who already enquired. Upload customer data only where you have the consent to use it that way.
Attribution. Two changes lowered the conversions Meta reports, without a single sale changing:
- January 2026: shorter view windows. PPC Land reported on 18 Oct 2025 that the 7-day and 28-day view windows would leave the Ads Insights API on 12 Jan 2026 (opens in a new tab), leaving 1-day click, 7-day click, 28-day click, 1-day engaged view and 1-day view.
- March 2026: what counts as a click. Meta's post Simplifying Ad Measurement for a Social-First World (opens in a new tab) (3 Mar 2026) narrowed click-through attribution to link clicks for website and in-store conversions. Conversions after a like, save or share moved to "engage-through" attribution. Meta also cut the engaged-view threshold for video from 10 seconds to 5, noting that "46% of online purchase conversions with Reels now happen within the first 2 seconds of attention". Meta says the change should align its reports "better with third-party tools like Google Analytics", and that billing doesn't change.
So before you compare this year with last year, mark January and March 2026 in your reports and compare like with like. Better still, count leads and sales in your own lead register or CRM, which neither change touches. That is the rule on our own site: GA4 records taps on WhatsApp, call and email links as intent, and only a chat, call or form that actually arrives counts as a lead.
Where do WhatsApp Status and Threads ads fit?#
WhatsApp Status. Meta announced ads in Status in June 2025, inside the Updates tab, which it said was "used by 1.5 billion people per day globally". Meta says ads there use "limited info like your country or city, language, the Channels you're following and how you interact with the ads you see", and that "personal messages, calls and groups you are in will not be used to determine the ads you may see". On the July 2026 earnings call, Meta said it had added "more types of ad destinations and advertiser performance goals in Status" and was "on track toward our global rollout". We haven't found a public list of countries, so check the placements in your own Ads Manager. For Kerala, where nearly every enquiry already ends in a WhatsApp chat, it is worth testing once it shows up, with the same creative rules as Stories.
Threads. Meta began rolling out Threads ads to users worldwide in late January 2026, in image, video and carousel formats (TechCrunch, 21 Jan 2026), and on the July 2026 call said it had completed that global expansion. Mark Zuckerberg put Threads at more than 500 million monthly actives on the same call. With Advantage+ placements on, your ads can already appear there. Treat it as part of the mix rather than a channel to plan for separately, and watch its numbers in the placement breakdown.
Neither placement replaces click-to-WhatsApp ads for lead generation. Our click-to-WhatsApp guide covers how those work and what happens after the chat opens.
How should lead advertisers adapt?#
Meta's system now finds people who are likely to do what you optimise for. If you optimise for form fills, you get form fills. The fix is to give it better signals and better filters.
- Pick the right instant form. Meta's help page on instant form types (opens in a new tab) (read 4 Oct 2026) lists three: More volume (the default), Higher intent and Rich creative. Higher intent adds a review screen so people confirm their details, which Meta says helps "prevent receiving submissions from those people who are only marginally interested". It only shows on Facebook and Instagram feeds on mobile.
- Ask one qualifying question. Budget band, preferred location, course or intake: one question that sorts a buyer from a browser.
- Send sales back to Meta. Meta's Conversion Leads integration (opens in a new tab) (read 4 Oct 2026) optimises for leads that reach a stage in your CRM. It asks for at least 200 leads a month, uploads at least once a day, a target stage reached within 28 days, and a stage conversion rate between 1% and 40%. Our guide to offline conversion tracking shows how to set that loop up for Meta and Google.
- Make the page after the click earn its place. If the ad sends people to a website, the page decides your cost per lead. Our landing page checklist covers message match, speed and the form.
- Answer fast. A lead from a reel goes cold within hours. Have a CRM ready before the ads scale.
That last point is the pattern in our education work. For VONA School of Design, a new design school in Calicut, we ran a 45-day Meta sprint on video creatives that put the offer, GCC placements, on screen in the first seven seconds. Every enquiry went into Xale (opens in a new tab), the CRM built by the team behind Marketlube, and our team reports 50+ admissions from ₹1.5 lakh of Meta ad spend. Clear offer, distinct creative, fast follow-up: none of the 2026 changes made those less important.
Frequently asked questions#
Is Advantage+ mandatory on Meta in 2026?#
No. Meta's leads campaigns start in an "Advantage+ On" state by default, but you can narrow the audience or placements, which switches the campaign to "Advantage+ Off". Meta's own page lists the conditions: Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience on in at least one ad set, and all placements selected.
Why did my Meta ads report fewer conversions in 2026?#
Two measurement changes did it. The 7-day and 28-day view windows left the Ads Insights API on 12 January 2026, and from March 2026 Meta counts only link clicks as click-through conversions, with likes, saves and shares moved to engage-through attribution. Your real sales didn't change, so compare with your CRM.
Can you still exclude audiences in Meta ads?#
You can exclude custom audiences, such as a customer list or past enquirers, but not detailed targeting options like interests and behaviours. Meta removed those exclusions in 2025 and said the median cost per conversion was 22.6% lower without them.
Are WhatsApp Status ads available for Indian businesses?#
Meta hasn't published a country list. On its July 2026 earnings call it said Status ads were "on track toward our global rollout", with more ad destinations and goals added. Check the placement list in your Ads Manager; if Status appears, it is available to you.
Does boosting a post from the Instagram app cost more?#
It can. Meta's help article says an Apple service fee of 30% of the ad payment may apply, in most regions, when you add funds in the Instagram app on iOS. Paying from a browser or Ads Manager avoids that fee.
Make the 2026 rules work for your account#
