"Should we put the money into Google or Instagram?" is usually the first question a Kerala business owner asks before spending on ads. It is the same question we start with when planning performance marketing for Kerala and Gulf brands. Asked as either/or, it leads to wasted budgets. Asked as "which job does each platform do for us?", it has a clear answer.
This guide gives that answer: how the two ad auctions differ, which platform tends to lead for common Kerala industries, how to split a monthly budget, and why Onam, the wedding months and the Gulf summer holidays change what you pay.
What is the real difference between Google Ads and Meta ads?#
The difference is intent. Google Search ads appear because someone typed a query: "dermatologist near Mavoor Road", "IELTS coaching Kozhikode", "3BHK villa Calicut". The person has already named the need. Your job is to be the best answer on that results page.
Meta ads appear while someone is scrolling Instagram reels or their Facebook feed. They were not looking for you. Meta's system predicts who is likely to respond, and your creative has to make them stop, care and act.
The two auctions reward different things:
- Google ranks ads using your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page (expected click-through rate, ad relevance, landing page experience) and the context of the search, as set out in Google's own explanation of Ad Rank (opens in a new tab). Keywords and landing pages are your main levers.
- Meta runs an auction for every impression and weighs your bid against the estimated chance that this person takes your chosen action and the quality of the ad, according to Meta's guide to ad auctions (opens in a new tab). Creative and offer are your main levers; targeting is increasingly automatic.
The reach on both sides is large in India. DataReportal's Digital 2026 India report (opens in a new tab) puts YouTube's Indian ad audience at about 500 million, Instagram at about 481 million and Facebook at about 403 million in late 2025. Audience size is rarely the constraint for a Kerala business. Intent, offer and follow-up are.
Why Meta leads look cheaper#
Public benchmarks show the intent gap clearly. WordStream by LocaliQ's US data puts the average cost per lead for Google search campaigns (opens in a new tab) at $66.69, against $27.39 for Facebook lead campaigns (opens in a new tab). For real estate the gap is wider: $102.51 on search against $13.74 on Facebook.
That is American data, and Indian costs are far lower in absolute terms. The useful part is the direction: a Meta lead is usually cheaper to buy and needs more qualifying before it becomes a site visit, an appointment or a sale. Judge the platforms on cost per qualified lead or cost per sale, never on cost per lead alone.
Which platform should a Kerala business start with?#
Work through four questions in order.
- Do customers search for what you sell by name? If people type your service into Google ("root canal treatment Calicut", "AC service near me", "B.Com colleges in Kozhikode"), start with Google Search. You are buying demand that already exists.
- Is the product visual, impulse-led or new to the market? If nobody searches for it yet, or it sells on how it looks (jewellery, fashion, food, interiors, a new villa project), start with Meta. You are creating demand.
- Is it a big, slow decision? Property, higher education, a wedding set or a car usually needs both: Meta to build a pool of interested people, Google to catch them when they search later, and remarketing on both to bring them back.
- Is part of your market in the Gulf? For Kerala businesses selling to NRIs in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Oman, Meta's location and language targeting usually does the prospecting. Google catches the people who then search your brand or project name.
Here is how that usually plays out by industry.
For online stores, the split between discovery and search is the whole game. Our notes on marketing for D2C and e-commerce brands go deeper on feeds, catalogue ads and return-on-ad-spend targets.
Two regulatory notes change the plan in some industries. Kerala real estate ads must carry the project's K-RERA registration number and the Authority's website under Section 11(2) of the RERA Act, which limits how "teaser" a launch campaign can be. Healthcare ads face both platform policies and Indian medical-advertising rules, so patient testimonials, cure claims and before-and-after images are best left out. Search, which answers a question the patient has already asked, tends to be the safer first channel for clinics.
How should you split a budget between Google and Meta?#
The mistake at small budgets is splitting too early. Both platforms learn from conversions, and a thin budget spread across two platforms gives neither enough data. Meta calls this the learning phase: an ad set needs a steady flow of results before delivery stabilises.
These are the planning rules we use. They are heuristics, not benchmarks.
Planning heuristics for 2026. Add 18% GST on ad spend in India, and keep production costs separate.
How do Onam, weddings and Gulf holidays change ad costs in Kerala?#
Both platforms run auctions, so prices rise when more advertisers chase the same people. On Meta you pay for impressions, so festive weeks lift costs across almost every audience in Kerala: every textile shop, jewellery showroom, electronics chain and car dealer is pushing offers to the same users at once. On Google the rise is narrower. It hits the keywords everyone bids on in that season ("Onam offers", "gold jewellery designs", "TV exchange offer") rather than the whole account.
Three habits keep festive costs sane:
- Launch new campaigns before the rush, not during it. A fresh ad set in its learning phase during Onam week is the most expensive way to learn.
- Collect audiences in quiet months. Video viewers, website visitors and WhatsApp enquirers from July become your cheapest audience in August.
- Protect your brand name on Google. In festive weeks competitors bid on each other's names. A small brand campaign costs little and stops them taking your searchers.
Which platform is better for reaching Gulf NRIs?#
For most Kerala businesses selling to the Gulf, Meta does the prospecting. You can target people located in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, add Malayalam as a language, and send them straight into a WhatsApp chat. Our guide to click-to-WhatsApp ads covers that set-up and what should happen after the chat opens.
Google plays a supporting role. NRIs who saw your villa project on Instagram will later search the project or builder name from Dubai or Doha. Keep a search campaign ready to catch them, with copy that answers NRI questions: video walkthroughs, NRI home loans and power of attorney.
Mind the time difference. The UAE and Oman are 1.5 hours behind India; Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are 2.5 hours behind. Evening ads in the Gulf land late at night in Kerala, so someone has to answer those chats.
How do you know which platform is actually working?#
Each platform reports its own conversions using its own attribution window, so the same customer can be claimed by both. Make your CRM or lead sheet the source of truth and judge each platform on what happens after the lead.
Send those outcomes back to the platforms. Google Ads can import offline conversions, and Meta's Conversions API accepts CRM events, so both algorithms learn to find more buyers rather than more form-fillers. For planning targets, compare your numbers with our roundup of cost per lead benchmarks for India and the UAE.
What mistakes waste money on each platform?#
On Google:
- Broad-match keywords without negatives, so "jobs", "free" and "wholesale" searches eat the budget.
- Sending ads to the homepage instead of a page that matches the search.
- Not tracking phone calls, often the main conversion for clinics and service businesses.
- Running Performance Max without brand exclusions, then crediting it with sales your brand name would have won anyway.
On Meta:
- Boosting posts from the Instagram app instead of building campaigns in Ads Manager.
- Running one creative for months; creative fatigue quietly raises your costs.
- Using instant forms with no qualifying questions, then blaming the platform for poor leads.
- Letting WhatsApp enquiries wait overnight, by which time they have usually spoken to a competitor.
Frequently asked questions#
Is Google Ads or Meta cheaper in Kerala?#
Meta usually has the lower cost per click and cost per lead. Google usually delivers higher intent per lead. Which is "cheaper" depends on your cost per sale, which you only know once your CRM tracks leads through to revenue.
Can I run Google Ads in Malayalam?#
Yes. Google Ads supports Malayalam as a language setting, and many Kerala users search in English, Manglish or Malayalam script. Test Malayalam ad copy for local services, but keep English campaigns running, because a large share of commercial searches are still typed in English.
How much should a small Kerala business spend to test ads?#
Enough to get a readable result in about 30 days on one platform. For many local service businesses that means ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 a month in ad spend before GST, but a high-ticket category like real estate needs more. Treat these as planning ranges and confirm them against your own cost per lead.
Should I boost Instagram posts or use Ads Manager?#
Use Ads Manager for anything tied to leads or sales. Boosting is fine for reach on a post that is already doing well, but it gives you fewer objectives, weaker targeting control and less useful reporting.
Which platform is better for real estate in Kerala?#
Most Kerala builders start with Meta for lead generation and add Google for project-name and location searches. Always include the K-RERA registration number and website in the ads, and qualify leads fast, ideally over WhatsApp.
Build a channel plan around your numbers#
