The honest answer to "how much does a website cost?" is another question: how much work do you need the website to do? A five-page site that proves you exist is a different product from a site that ranks on Google, loads in two seconds on a phone in Kasaragod and routes every enquiry into a CRM. Both are called website development, and both get quoted as "a website".
This guide compares the three routes most Kerala businesses choose between, WordPress, Shopify and a custom Next.js build, line by line. All figures are typical planning ranges for Kerala in 2026, not a rate card. Use them to sanity-check quotes, then confirm with written proposals.
How much does a website cost in Kerala in 2026?#
Typical ranges in 2026, excluding GST, content production and third-party fees. Confirm with quotes.
If a quote sits well below these ranges, it is usually a template with your logo on it. That can be exactly right for a new business. It becomes expensive when you later need the site to rank, convert or integrate, because most of it has to be rebuilt.
What are you actually paying for, line by line?#
A custom site is a bundle of separate jobs. Seeing them separately makes quotes easier to compare.
Planning ranges. Many agencies bundle these; ask which are included.
Design is where cheap and custom sites differ most. A template gives you someone else's layout decisions. Proper UI/UX design starts from what your visitors need to find and do, which is why a well-designed page often converts better than a prettier one.
WordPress, Shopify or custom Next.js: how do the costs compare?#
Build cost is only the first bill. Hosting, upkeep and platform fees continue for as long as the site is live.
Plan prices from Shopify India's pricing page at the time of writing; other ranges are typical 2026 planning figures.
What does a Shopify store cost to run in India?#
Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian stores use a gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree. That means two layers of fees on each online sale: the gateway's charge and Shopify's third-party provider fee. Shopify lists that fee as 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Razorpay's standard pricing is 2% per successful domestic transaction, plus 18% GST on the fee (opens in a new tab). On ₹10 lakh a month of online sales, that difference between plans is worth working out before you choose one. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison for Indian brands covers cash on delivery, GST invoicing and selling to the GCC.
An illustrative three-year comparison#
Here is how a cheaper build and a custom build can compare over three years. The numbers are assumptions for illustration, not quotes.
The custom site still costs more. What changes is what you get for the gap: a site designed around your enquiries, faster pages and no forced rebuild in year two. Whether that is worth ₹1.2 lakh depends on how much of your business starts online. For a builder, a hospital or an education group, it usually is. For a café, it usually is not.
What are the hidden costs of a cheap website?#
A low quote is not a problem on its own. These are the costs it tends to hide:
- Slow pages. Google's Core Web Vitals set "good" at a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less (opens in a new tab). Heavy themes and page builders often miss these on mid-range Android phones, the devices many visitors in Kerala actually use.
- Plugin sprawl. Every extra plugin is another thing to update. Neglected WordPress sites are a common target for malware, and a clean-up can easily cost more than a year of maintenance.
- Ownership gaps. Domain registered in the developer's name, hosting on their account, no admin login for you. Moving away later can take weeks.
- Lost rankings on relaunch. Changing URLs without 301 redirects throws away the search visibility the old site had built.
- Enquiries that go nowhere. A form that emails one inbox, with no CRM, no auto-reply and no WhatsApp routing, leaks leads quietly.
- Privacy compliance added late. India notified the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules on 14 November 2025 (opens in a new tab), with an 18-month phased compliance period. Lead forms that collect names and phone numbers need a clear notice and consent. Building that in now is cheaper than retrofitting it.
- Content that never arrives. Many projects stall waiting for copy and photos. If the quote does not include them, budget time and money for them.
What slows a website project down?#
Timelines slip for the same reasons almost every time:
- Content. Copy, photos and product data arrive late. Agree who writes what, and by when, before design starts.
- Approvals. Five people giving feedback in separate WhatsApp threads adds weeks. Nominate one decision-maker.
- Integrations. CRMs, booking engines and payment gateways each need accounts, credentials and testing.
- Scope creep. "Can we also add a booking form?" is a fair request, but price and schedule it as a change, not a favour.
What should a website quote include?#
Before you sign, check that the proposal states:
- Number of page templates and pages, and how many design revision rounds.
- Who writes the copy and in which languages.
- The CMS, what your team can edit themselves, and whether training is included.
- SEO set-up: titles, schema markup, sitemap and redirects from the old site.
- Speed targets and how they will be measured.
- Integrations: forms, CRM, WhatsApp, payments, analytics and consent.
- Hosting and accounts: that the domain, hosting, analytics and code repository are in your name.
- Maintenance terms: what a yearly plan covers, response times, and the hourly rate for extra work.
- GST: whether prices include it. IT and design services usually carry 18%.
Do you need an online store or a Gulf version?#
If you sell products online, the build becomes a store, and conversion depends on product pages, delivery costs, cash on delivery and checkout steps. Our e-commerce development work starts from that buying journey rather than from a theme.
If you serve customers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar, plan for an Arabic version from the start. Right-to-left layouts, Arabic typography and translated copy add design and development time, and a second currency affects pricing and checkout. For Gulf clients, most business websites fall between AED 8,000 and AED 30,000 depending on scope.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I get a good website for ₹15,000 in Kerala?#
You can get a working template site for that, usually from a freelancer, and it can be enough for a new business that needs a phone number, location and service list online. Expect limited design choices, little SEO work and no integrations. Make sure the domain and hosting are registered in your name.
Is WordPress or a custom site better for SEO?#
Neither platform ranks by itself. A lean, well-built WordPress site can rank very well. Custom builds make speed and technical control easier, which helps in competitive searches. What matters more is content that answers buyers' questions, fast pages and clean technical foundations.
How much does website maintenance cost per year?#
For a typical business site in Kerala, plan roughly ₹10,000–₹40,000 a year for hosting, updates, backups and small edits, and more for stores or sites with many integrations. Check what the plan covers: security monitoring, uptime alerts, content changes and how quickly issues are fixed.
Who should own the domain and hosting?#
You should. Register the domain in your company's name and email address, keep the hosting and analytics accounts under your business, and give the developer access rather than ownership. Ask for the code repository and admin credentials at handover.
How much does an e-commerce website cost in Kerala?#
A custom Shopify store typically costs ₹1.2–3 lakh and a WooCommerce build with custom features ₹1.5–4 lakh. Add the running costs: Shopify plan or hosting, apps or plugins, payment gateway fees and GST. Stores with Arabic storefronts for the GCC cost more.
Get a quote you can compare#
The best way to compare website quotes is to put them in the same shape: line items, platform, running costs and who owns what. If you want a proposal written that way, share what your website needs to do and we will scope it with you. You can also see how we approach custom website builds before you get in touch.
