We sell websites, so read this knowing an agency wrote it. We build them as part of our website design and development work, and this post tries to show where a builder is the better buy as plainly as where it stops. Vendor prices are each builder's own, read on its pricing page on 27 October 2026, in the currency the page showed us, unconverted. Ours are from our published price list.
What does an AI website builder actually do?#
You describe the business in a sentence or two, and the builder drafts a site: pages, layout, placeholder copy and images, which you then edit in a drag-and-drop editor. Wix's plans page, for example, lists an AI website builder that creates a site from a single prompt, alongside AI creation tools in every plan. Squarespace lists built-in AI tools and an allowance of AI credits on each plan, Hostinger's builder page names an AI website builder, an AI writer and an AI logo maker, and Framer sells AI agents that work on a site with monthly credits.
The draft is the easy part. A builder's real value is everything after it: hosting, security certificates, updates and backups are the platform's job, not yours.
What do AI website builders do well?#
- Speed to a first site. A credible one-page or five-page site in an afternoon, with no designer or developer to brief.
- No upkeep. No plugins to patch and no server to watch. When the platform updates, your site updates with it.
- Predictable bills. One plan fee a month or a year, published on the vendor's page.
- Fast pages, often. In HTTP Archive's Core Web Vitals Technology Report (opens in a new tab), which joins Chrome's real-user data with the technology each site runs, builder sites pass Google's speed thresholds more often than the average WordPress site. Our read of the September 2026 data, on 27 October 2026:
A "site" is an origin with enough Chrome traffic to be measured. Our arithmetic on the report's counts; the India samples for the builders are small.
What does an AI website builder cost over three years?#
Builders: each vendor's pricing page, read from Calicut on 27 October 2026. A page shows the currency it picks for the visitor, so a reader in the UAE may see dirhams and different figures; we converted nothing. Ours: our pricing page, before GST in India and before VAT where it applies in the Gulf. Our Gulf prices are fixed figures, the same number in dirhams, Qatari riyals and Saudi riyals. Three years of ours is the build plus 36 months of care at our starting prices.
Wix sells an AI builder too, but its plans page sets prices and currency by the visitor's location, and the copy our check loaded showed no figure we could confirm, so Wix stays out of the table.
The table leaves out costs both sides share. A builder's three years still need a domain after the first year, a business email, paid apps for anything the plan lacks, and your own hours writing and editing pages. Our rows leave out hosting and the domain, which are billed at cost in your name, and the copy, photos or translation a project scopes on top. Our guide to website development costs in Kerala breaks a custom build into its line items.
The gap is real: a builder's three years cost a fraction of an agency's. The question is what the site has to earn.
Where do AI website builders stop?#
- Custom features. A booking flow with your own rules, a fee or EMI calculator, a dealer locator or a member area tied to your own records. A builder offers what its app market offers; beyond that, you work around it or wait.
- Search control. Most builders let you edit titles, descriptions and most addresses. The page code, the scripts the platform loads and much of the structured data stay the platform's choice. For a site that competes for searches, a custom build controls every tag; our SEO work starts there.
- Ownership. The site lives on the builder's platform. Content can usually be exported, but the design and the working site generally don't move to another host, so read the export options before you build, and register the domain in your company's name either way.
- Arabic and English for the Gulf. A Gulf site needs right-to-left layouts, Arabic type that reads well and a translation a native writer has checked. Framer prices its AI translation at $20 per locale; machine translation is a start, not a finished Arabic page. Our post on Arabic and English website design lists what to check.
- Integrations. WhatsApp click-to-chat, Indian and Gulf payment gateways, lead forms that route by service and branch, your ad platforms' conversion tracking. A builder connects what its marketplace lists.
- A design that is yours. A builder's draft starts from its templates, so a competitor can start from the same one. Custom UI and UX design starts from what your buyers need to find and do.
Who should use an AI builder, and who should hire a web agency?#
A builder site is not a lesser site. It is a different bet: low cost now, with limits you accept later. An agency build costs more now so the site can grow without a rebuild.
Can you start on a builder and move to a custom site later?#
Yes, and many businesses should. Three habits make the move cheap later. Register the domain yourself, in your company's name, not through the builder's bundle. Keep your copy and photos in your own folders, not only in the editor. And keep a list of every page address, because each one that earns visits will need a permanent redirect when you move; our website redesign SEO checklist covers that day. If you are choosing the platform for the custom site at the same point, our Next.js vs WordPress comparison sets the two side by side.
Frequently asked questions#
Are AI website builders good for business websites?#
For a simple site, yes: the plans are cheap, the platform handles hosting and updates, and in HTTP Archive's September 2026 data, sites on the larger builders passed Core Web Vitals on mobile more often than the average WordPress site. They suit businesses whose site lists services and contact details, less so sites that need custom features or integrations.
Is an AI-built website bad for SEO?#
Not by itself. A builder site can rank when its pages answer what buyers search for, load fast and carry clear titles. The limits are control: the page code and many technical settings belong to the platform, which matters most in competitive searches.
How long does an AI builder take compared with a web agency?#
A builder can produce a first draft in minutes; finishing it takes as long as your own writing, photos and edits. A custom-designed business website of up to 8 pages takes 4 to 8 weeks on our price list, most of it design, content and testing.
Can an AI website builder make an Arabic website?#
Several builders translate pages with AI, sometimes as a paid add-on per language. Check that the editor supports right-to-left layouts and Arabic type, and have a native Arabic writer review every page before it goes live.
Still deciding?#
If a builder fits, use one: it is the honest answer for many small businesses. If you are not sure, tell us what your site has to do and we will say which route fits, or see how our web team in Calicut prices a custom build.
