We are a digital marketing team in Calicut working with Kerala businesses, so we sell some of what follows. This plan is written so you can do most of it yourself, and it says plainly where paying for help starts to make sense.

Most marketing advice online is written for American small businesses with American budgets. A tea shop in Thalassery, a dental clinic in Thrissur or a tuition centre in Kollam has a different set of customers: people who live on their phones, research on Instagram and YouTube, ask questions on WhatsApp and often have family in the Gulf. This guide is the plan we would give a friend starting out in 2026, with the numbers behind it.

Where should a small Kerala business start in 2026?#

Start where your customers already are, which in Kerala means the phone. TRAI's performance indicators for January to March 2026 (opens in a new tab) (released 22 June 2026) counted 35.62 million internet subscriptions in the Kerala service area, 98.18 per 100 people, against 76.59 for India. Kerala's telephone density was 122.96%, against 93.26% nationally, and the average Indian wireless data user got through 26.70 GB a month. Subscriptions aren't people, because many have two SIMs, but the direction is clear: almost every customer you want can see your business on a screen.

You are also not alone. The Ministry of MSME's Udyam dashboard (opens in a new tab) listed 23,26,568 MSMEs in Kerala when we read it on 4 October 2026: 12,58,531 registered on Udyam, nearly all of them micro, plus 10,68,037 informal micro units on the Udyam Assist platform. The State Planning Board's Economic Review 2025 (opens in a new tab) (January 2026) adds that the state's Year of Enterprises 3.0 campaign started 1,17,442 new MSMEs by 20 November 2025, about one-third of them promoted by women. Competition for attention is local and crowded.

So the first month is about three foundations, not ten channels:

  1. A complete Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, photos, services, phone and WhatsApp. Google's guidelines (opens in a new tab) (read 4 October 2026) bar marketing taglines and service keywords from the business name, and make virtual offices ineligible, so use your real name and real address. Our guide to ranking in the Google Map Pack covers the set-up step by step.
  2. A WhatsApp number that gets answered. The free WhatsApp Business app gives you a catalogue, a greeting message and an away message. One number, on every profile, answered within the hour during business hours.
  3. One channel, worked properly. Pick the one that matches how customers find you (next section) and commit to it for 90 days before adding another.

Many Kerala businesses also sell to the Gulf without planning to. The Kerala Migration Survey 2023 (opens in a new tab) (the GIFT copy dated July 2024) estimated 2.2 million emigrants from Kerala, 80.5% of them in the GCC, and remittances of ₹2,16,893 crore in 2023. Families with Gulf income buy homes, gold, education and weddings, and many decisions are made over a WhatsApp call from Dubai or Doha.

Which channels fit which Kerala businesses?#

The deciding question is whether customers search for what you sell. If they type it into Google ("dentist near me", "IELTS coaching Kozhikode"), you capture demand. If they don't, because it is new, visual or an impulse buy, you create demand on Instagram and Facebook. Our comparison of Meta and Google ads for Kerala businesses goes deeper; here is the short version.

BusinessLead channelSupport channelWhat to skip at first
Shop or showroomGoogle Business Profile and Instagram reelsWhatsApp cataloguePaid ads until reviews and posts are steady
ClinicGoogle Business Profile and Google searchWhatsApp for timings and directionsBefore-and-after content, which medical ethics rules make risky
Tuition centre or instituteInstagram and Meta lead ads in admission seasonGoogle search for course namesYear-round ad spend outside the season

Café or restaurantInstagram reels and the Business ProfileDelivery app listingsBlog posts nobody searches for
D2C brandMeta ads with several distinct creativesGoogle Shopping once products sellFive marketplaces at once

Two notes on the table. Every row starts with free channels, because a Business Profile and a WhatsApp number cost nothing. And every row has one lead channel, because splitting effort across five platforms is how small businesses end up posting once a month everywhere.

How much should you spend in the first 90 days?#

Less than you fear, but on purpose. Our guide to digital marketing costs in Kerala sets out planning ranges for agency fees and media by business type, so we won't repeat them here. What matters for a small business is the order of spending:

  • Days 1 to 30: time, not money. Profile, WhatsApp, photos and your first posts. If you spend anything, spend it on a phone tripod, a clip-on microphone and a good photo shoot of your premises and products.
  • Days 31 to 60: a small test on one channel. Run one ad campaign with two or three genuinely different creatives, for long enough to learn which brings enquiries, not just likes.
  • Days 61 to 90: put money behind what worked. Move the budget to the creative and audience that brought real chats or calls, and stop the rest.

Keep a reserve for your season. Onam in Chingam (August and September) is the state's biggest buying season for textiles, gold, furniture and electronics, with Vishu in April close behind; Christmas weighs most in central Kerala, and Ramzan and Eid in Malabar. Karkidakam, the monsoon month before Onam, is traditionally quiet for weddings, housewarmings and big purchases, but it is peak season for Ayurveda packages. Ads cost more when every competitor is bidding in the same week, so build your audience in the quiet months and spend hardest just before your peak.

What should you post, and in which language?#

Post what a customer would ask you in person, and say it the way they would text it.

Language changes results in Kerala. We test Malayalam, English and mixed Manglish hooks side by side on the same audience before settling, and write captions the way people actually type them. An ad for Malabar and an ad for Travancore shouldn't sound the same, and a Kochi office worker reads English differently from a family in Malappuram. If you only test one thing in your first 90 days, test language.

What to post, in rough order of value:

  • Answers to real questions. "What does a root canal cost?", "Which course after Plus Two?", "Is this sofa fabric pet-friendly?" One question per reel, with the question on screen in the first second for people scrolling with the sound off. That is the rule behind the 60+ videos a month our team reports making for Skymark Education, a study abroad consultancy.
  • Proof. Real photos of your work, premises and team, finished projects, and customer reviews shared with their permission.
  • Offers and seasons. Festive collections, admission dates, monsoon packages, a new branch.
  • Behind the scenes. How a dish is made, how a site is built, how a class runs. It builds the familiarity that word of mouth used to.

Reels first, then carousels for detail and stories for daily updates. Consistency beats volume: three good posts a week for 90 days teaches you more than 30 posts in the first fortnight and silence after.

How do you turn clicks into WhatsApp chats and calls?#

Make every path end in a conversation, and make that conversation easy to start.

  • Put WhatsApp and call buttons everywhere: on the Business Profile, the Instagram bio, the website header and every ad that allows it.
  • Pre-fill the first message. A WhatsApp link can carry a ready-made first message. On our own site, every WhatsApp link opens a chat whose first message says it came from marketlube.in and, where it can, names the page, service or article the person was reading, so whoever answers knows the context before replying.
  • Answer in Gulf hours too. The UAE and Oman are 1.5 hours behind India; Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are 2.5 hours behind. An enquiry sent after dinner in Dubai arrives late at night in Kerala. Set an away message that says when you will reply, then reply first thing.
  • Send ad traffic to a page that matches the ad, not your home page. Our landing page checklist covers message match, speed and the form, and when it is better to skip the page and open WhatsApp straight from the ad.

Then track what happens. On our own site, GA4 records taps on the WhatsApp, call and email links as key events, but only a chat, call or form that actually arrives counts as a lead. A small business can do the same with a notebook or a spreadsheet: date, name, how they found you, what they asked, and whether they bought. When the sheet stops keeping up, Xale, the CRM built by the team behind Marketlube, has a page on what a 2 to 15 person team sets up in its first week (opens in a new tab).

What do AI answers and Google's AI Mode in Malayalam change?#

More of your customers will meet you through an AI summary before they meet your website. In October 2025 Google rolled out AI Mode in Malayalam (opens in a new tab) and six other Indian languages (Google India, 8 October 2025), so a customer in Kannur can now ask Google a long question in Malayalam and get an AI-written answer with links.

For a small business, three things follow:

  • Your Business Profile feeds AI answers too. Google's guide to generative AI features (opens in a new tab) (updated 10 July 2026) says AI responses "can include product listings, product information, and information about local businesses", and that Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results".
  • Consistent facts matter more. If your name, address, phone and hours differ between Google, Justdial, Instagram and your website, an AI summary may repeat the wrong one.
  • First-hand content wins. Google's same guide favours "non-commodity" content, meaning experience and specifics rather than generic tips. A clinic explaining what its own patients ask, or a builder showing a real site visit, gives an AI answer something to quote.

You don't need special files or tricks for this. Our explainer on generative engine optimisation covers what works if you want to go further.

What should you check every week?#

Thirty minutes, the same day every week:

CheckWhereWhat you are looking for
Calls, direction requests and messagesGoogle Business ProfileIs it rising month on month?
New reviewsGoogle Business ProfileReply to every one, good or bad
WhatsApp enquiries and reply timeWhatsApp Business appHow many chats, and how fast you answered
Where leads came fromYour notebook, sheet or CRMWhich channel brings people who buy
Ad spend against enquiriesMeta Ads Manager or Google AdsCost per real conversation, not per click
Searches that found youGoogle Search Console, if you have a websiteNew queries and pages gaining impressions

If your website runs GA4, a newer option helps: since 8 June 2026 Google Analytics can link to your Business Profile (opens in a new tab) and show its calls, bookings, direction requests, website clicks and messages beside your website data. Write down three numbers each week (enquiries, sales and spend) and you will know more about your marketing than most businesses twice your size.

When is it time to hire help?#

When the basics work but you can't keep up with them. The usual signs:

  • You have stopped posting because the shop, clinic or classroom takes all your time.
  • Enquiries arrive but some go unanswered for hours, or customers say they messaged and heard nothing.
  • You want to spend real money on ads and need someone who can test creatives and read the numbers.
  • Your season is coming and you need a month of content made in two weeks.
  • You are adding a channel (video, a website, a CRM) that needs skills you don't have.

Hire for the gap, not for everything. A good photographer, a freelance editor or a part-time social media helper may be all a small shop needs. A clinic or an institute running ads in admission season usually needs someone who handles ads, landing pages and lead follow-up together. Our guide on how to choose a digital marketing agency in Kerala covers the questions to ask, the red flags and when a freelancer is the better choice. If you want advice before you hire anyone, book a one-hour consultation with our co-founders; our guide to consultants, freelancers, agencies and in-house teams compares the options.

Frequently asked questions#

How should a small business in Kerala start digital marketing?#

Start with a complete Google Business Profile, a WhatsApp Business number that gets answered quickly, and one channel worked properly for 90 days. Choose Google search if customers search for what you sell, and Instagram reels if they don't. Add paid ads once the free channels bring steady enquiries.

Is Instagram or Google better for a small business in Kerala?#

It depends on demand. Google suits needs people search for, such as clinics, repairs and courses. Instagram suits visual, new or impulse products, such as food, fashion, furniture and gifts. Many local businesses use both, with the Google Business Profile as the free base for either.

Should a Kerala business post in Malayalam or English?#

Test both, plus Manglish, on the same audience before deciding. Language changes cost per lead in Kerala, and the right mix differs by region and customer: family buyers often trust Malayalam, while younger urban audiences often take English or mixed hooks in their stride.

Does a small business need a website if it has Instagram and WhatsApp?#

Not on day one, but soon. A Business Profile, Instagram and WhatsApp can bring the first enquiries. A website helps once you run search ads, want to appear for searches beyond your name, or want AI answers to describe you accurately.

How long does digital marketing take to work for a small business?#

A complete Business Profile and well-run ads can bring enquiries within weeks. Local SEO usually takes 4 to 8 weeks to move, and competitive search terms often take 3 to 6 months of steady work. Treat the first 90 days as learning what works for your business.
