We are an agency, so read this knowing which side we sit on. Sometimes the right answer is a freelancer or a small in-house team instead of us, and this guide explains when. It applies whether you need social media, Meta and Google ads, SEO or a website. Fidal P, our co-founder, is a digital marketing consultant, and we sell consultations, so we kept our own pages out of the findings.

Every figure below is a dated public source, our own cost guide or our own count of ranking consultant pages. Salaries are averages of the pay in Indeed's job postings, not what people earn.

What does each option cost in Calicut?#

Indeed's salary pages for Calicut (Kozhikode) give these averages:

A salary isn't the whole cost of an employee. Once your business is covered, the employer also pays:

A freelancer charges for the work alone. Of the consultant and freelancer pages we read on 7 October 2026, two published their own prices: SEO from ₹10,000 a month, and a marketing retainer from ₹25,000 a month before ad spend. Two more quoted Calicut market ranges: ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 a month for a digital marketing specialist, and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000+ for a consulting retainer.

An agency charges a retainer for a defined scope, and ad spend is paid separately. In our guide to digital marketing costs in Kerala, a typical "growth" retainer (social media management plus Meta ads, 4 to 8 reels, tracking and fortnightly reporting) runs ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 a month.

What does a small in-house team really cost?#

Take a Calicut business that wants regular social media, Meta ads and small website updates. A lean in-house version is one digital marketing executive and one graphic designer.

LineA month
Digital marketing executive, average advertised pay₹17,700
Graphic designer, average advertised pay₹18,600
Salaries₹36,300
Employer PF, pension, insurance and ESI: none below 10 employees; with both schemes, about 10% to 16% of pay, depending on how much of it counts as PF wages₹0 to ₹5,900
Salary and statutory costabout ₹36,300 to ₹42,200
Not includedlaptops, software, a desk, leave cover, training, and your own time managing them

Our calculation from the Indeed averages above, rounded: a floor, for a team with no video editor, developer or ad specialist.

So the in-house team and a mid-sized agency retainer can cost about the same each month. Two employees give you two people's hours, on your business alone. A retainer gives you a share of several specialists (design, video, ads, analytics) and their tools, but not their undivided attention.

When is a freelancer the right choice?#

  • The job is narrow and repeatable: a monthly set of social posts, a logo, a landing page, video edits from footage you shoot.
  • Someone in your business can brief the work, check it and decide what to do next.
  • The budget is small and you'd rather spend it on ads than on management.

The risk is concentration. One person holds the files, the passwords and the know-how. Keep every account in your company's name, and ask for source files as each job ends.

When is an in-house team the right choice?#

  • Marketing is daily work: several posts a day, fast replies, live events, a sales team waiting for leads.
  • The product takes months to learn: a technical service, a regulated sector or a large catalogue.
  • You can afford at least two people, so the work doesn't stop when one is away, and someone senior can manage them.

The risk is thin coverage: two people rarely cover design, video, ads, SEO and analytics well.

When is an agency the right choice?#

  • You need several skills at once, and hiring all of them would cost more than the work needs.
  • Results matter more than hours: leads, admissions, bookings or sales someone is accountable for in a contract.
  • You want to start within weeks and scale up for a season, such as an admissions cycle or a launch.

The risk is attention: the people in the pitch aren't always the people on the account, so ask who will do the work, by name. Our own founders have public profile pages (Althameem Ali, Fidal P), and any agency you shortlist should be able to show you the same for your account team.

Where does a consultant fit?#

A consultant sells judgement rather than hours of execution: a marketing plan, an audit of your ads and tracking, a second opinion before you sign an agency, or a monthly check-in that keeps an in-house team on course. The work itself still needs doing, by your team, a freelancer or an agency. Consultants charge by the session, the project or the month, and few publish a price.

Hire one when you're about to spend real money (a launch, a new channel, an agency contract) and want the plan checked first; when your team or agency is busy but nobody is looking at the whole picture; or when you need an audit you can act on, across ads, tracking, the website and sales follow-up.

Skip one when nobody will act on the advice: a plan without someone to run it is only a document. And since anyone can use the title, judge the person, not the word.

What did we find on the consultant pages that rank in Kerala?#

How we did this. On 7 October 2026, between 19:36 and 20:03 India time, we ran six searches on Brave Search with India selected: marketing consultant in Kerala, digital marketing consultant in Kerala, brand consultant in Kerala, digital marketing consultant in Calicut, business consultant in Kerala and AI consultant in Kerala. Brave isn't Google: this is one engine's view. Of the 60 results in the six top tens, 38 were one person's site, 7 a firm's consulting page, 8 directories or lists, 6 job boards and 1 a blog post. We read each of the 37 consultant pages as a search crawler receives it; 3 no longer worked, which left 34: 27 personal sites and 7 firms. We counted what each ranking page shows, and name no consultant, firm or site. None of our own pages was in the six top tens.

What the 34 pages showed:

  • Self-awarded titles: 18 put "best", "top", "No. 1" or "leading" in the title or main heading.
  • Proof: none showed a dated client result (a named client, a figure and a date). On 7 pages, a counter for projects, clients or years read "0" to a crawler, because it only counts up once JavaScript runs.
  • Prices: 2 published their own and 2 quoted market ranges: the figures in the cost section above.
  • Something free: 10 offered a consultation, strategy call, audit or assessment at no charge.
  • Questions before a call: 1 asked about the business (company, website, need and budget). The rest asked for little more than contact details and a message, or just opened WhatsApp.
  • Faces: 23 of the 27 personal sites showed a portrait of the consultant.
  • Markup: 25 carried Person markup, often just the author entry their website software adds; 5 had FAQ markup; 2 marked up a star rating on their own page.
  • Care: 3 still had a template's placeholder text where client testimonials should be.

The pages that rank are built for the search, with the phrase in the title, a face and a WhatsApp button. They rarely show the evidence you'd need to choose, so ask for it.

What should you check before hiring any of them?#

  • Ownership: ad accounts, analytics, the domain and the website stay in your company's name, with others added as partners.
  • Proof: work you can verify, such as a live website, a published case study or a reference you can call.
  • Scope in numbers: posts, reels, campaigns and reports per month, in writing.
  • Exit terms: notice, the handover of files and passwords, and work in progress.

For a consultant, ask six questions before you book:

  1. Can you show me a result with the client's name, the figures and the dates, and can I speak to that client?
  2. Who will I talk to, and who does the work afterwards?
  3. What will I have in writing after the session, and by when?
  4. What does it cost per session, project or month, and what's included?
  5. What should I bring: numbers, access or questions?
  6. If you do any of the work, who owns the accounts, data and files?

The red flags: a self-awarded "best" or "No. 1"; guaranteed rankings or results; no dated results you can check; a free session that turns out to be a sales pitch; a Google Business Profile name stuffed with keywords, which Google's guidelines (opens in a new tab) don't permit; and testimonials from colleagues rather than clients. Our guide to choosing a digital marketing agency has 12 questions and more red flags for agencies.

Can you mix them?#

Most growing businesses end up with a mix, and two work well:

  1. An in-house coordinator with an agency. One employee owns the calendar, the approvals and the daily replies. The agency brings strategy, creative and ads.
  2. A consultant above your own team or freelancers. The consultant sets the plan and reviews the numbers each month; your people or freelancers do the work.

Whatever the mix, decide who owns the result. When nobody owns the number, the leads fall between the parties.

Frequently asked questions#

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?#

Per hour, almost always; per result, not always. A freelancer's fee buys one person's time for one task, and you supply the strategy, the other skills and the management. Compare each option's full monthly cost, including your own time, with what it should deliver.

What does it cost to employ a digital marketing executive in Calicut?#

Indeed's Calicut page gave an average of ₹2,12,508 a year from 121 job postings (last updated April 2024). From 20 employees, the employer adds 12% of PF wages for provident fund and pension, plus 1% for insurance and charges, on wages up to ₹25,000 a month; from 10, it adds 3.25% for ESI for staff paid up to ₹21,000 a month. Equipment and management time come on top.

How much does a marketing consultant charge in Kerala?#

Few say. Of the 34 consultant pages we read on 7 October 2026, 2 published their own prices (SEO from ₹10,000 a month; a retainer from ₹25,000 a month before ad spend) and 2 quoted Calicut ranges of ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000+ a month. Ask what the fee includes, in writing.

Should a small business in Kerala hire an in-house marketer first?#

Only if marketing is already daily work and someone can manage the hire. Many do better starting with a freelancer or an agency on a defined scope, learning which channels bring customers, and hiring once there's steady work for a full-time role.

The right answer changes as you grow#

Most businesses use several of these over time: a freelancer for the first jobs, an agency when several skills are needed at once, in-house hires once marketing is daily work, and a consultant at the turning points. If you're deciding which step fits now, tell us what you need done, and we'll say honestly whether we're the right fit. If you'd rather talk it through first, book an hour with Fidal P or with both co-founders.
