Pathila Ayurveda House, Kovalam Ask for dates

Ayurveda wellness house,
Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram

Rest by the rhythm of the day.

പകലിന്റെ താളത്തിൽ, പതുക്കെ.

Pathila is a small Ayurveda wellness house in a coconut grove at Kovalam. Eleven rooms, a herb garden, a kitchen that cooks for each guest, and a day that starts at dawn and ends early. Every stay begins with a conversation with our physician.

A quiet Ayurveda treatment room in an old Kerala house: a dark wooden droni massage table on a red oxide floor, a copper pot, a brass lamp, folded white towels and fresh leaves on a banana leaf, morning sun slanting through a slatted window.

Wellness, not medical treatment.

ഞങ്ങൾ രോഗചികിത്സ നടത്തുന്നില്ല.

Pathila offers rest and wellness routines rooted in Kerala's Ayurveda tradition. We do not diagnose, treat or cure any disease, and a stay here is not a substitute for your doctor's care. If you live with a health condition, keep seeing your own doctor, keep taking what they prescribe, and tell us before you book.

ആദ്യം, ഒരു സംഭാഷണം

No therapy starts before you meet our physician.

On your first day you sit down with our physician for about 45 minutes. She asks about your sleep, your food, your work, the medicines you take and what you hope to get from the stay, and checks your pulse and blood pressure. Then she writes your plan: which therapies, on which days, and what you eat. You read it with her, and you can say no to any part of it.

  1. 01

    Before you travel

A short form and a 15-minute call or video call, free. If a wellness stay is not right for you just now, we say so before you book a flight.

  2. 02

    Day one

The full consultation, about 45 minutes, and your written plan. You read it together and agree it before anything starts.

  3. 03

    Every morning

A ten-minute check at 8.30 am. Sleep, appetite, how the massage felt. The plan changes when you need it to.

  4. 04

    Your last day

A closing talk and a one-page home routine to take with you: when to wake, what to eat, which practice to keep.

Therapists are women for women and men for men. If a therapy is not right for you on a given day, it is left out, and we tell you why.

കാര്യക്രമങ്ങൾ

Three routines, three lengths.

Each programme is a daily routine of rest, a simple diet, yoga and oil massage. What changes with length is how slowly we go and how much of the routine you learn to take home. Prices are per person and include your room, all meals, the consultations, the daily therapies your plan sets out, yoga and taxes.

The house goes quiet. Wi-Fi in the reading room switches off at ten.

A simple Kerala lunch on a worn teak table by a barred window: red rice and a leaf thoran on banana leaf in a brass bowl, lentil curry, steamed vegetables, a hammered copper tumbler of warm water and a lidded copper pot.

      അടുക്കള

Food is part of the routine.

Our kitchen is vegetarian and cooks three times a day for the guests in the house that week. Greens, herbs and bananas come from our own garden; rice, lentils and vegetables from farms and markets around Thiruvananthapuram. The physician's note for each guest goes to the kitchen, so your plate may differ from your neighbour's.

      • Simple and warm

Kanji, red rice, thorans, mild curries, steamed vegetables. Little oil, little salt, no deep frying.

      • Fixed times

Meals at the same time every day. Herbal water through the day; tea and coffee at breakfast only.

      • Lighter as the routine asks

On the light-diet routine, food is simplified in stages and brought back slowly before you leave.

      • Your needs

Tell us about allergies, gluten, nuts or a vegan diet. We cook for them.

      • No alcohol, no smoking

Across the house and grounds, for the length of your stay.

      • Picked that morning

Curry leaf, tulsi and the greens for the thoran come in from the garden on the morning they are cooked.

A woman gardener in a faded cotton saree picks leaves into a bamboo basket in a herb garden of laterite-edged beds behind a tile-roofed house, coconut palms and a jackfruit tree in the morning haze.

      The kitchen garden

About forty plants, a few steps from the stove.

Laterite beds behind the kitchen hold curry leaf, tulsi, aloe, adathoda, banana, and the greens for the thoran. Walk round with the gardener at 4 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.

The house takes its name from the garden: pathila means ten leaves, after the ten-leaf thoran Kerala kitchens cook in Karkidakam.

      മുറികൾ

      Eleven rooms, three kinds.

A guest room in an old Kerala house: a dark teak four-poster bed with white cotton sheets, a mosquito net tied to the posts and a cream blanket with a gold border, a copper jug on a stool, a cane chair, red oxide floor and a barred window onto coconut palms.
      A Courtyard room, late afternoon.
      • 6 rooms

        Garden room

22 square metres on the garden side of the house. Double or twin, fan and air-conditioning, a rain shower. Opens onto the herb garden.

        Included in the programme price

      • 3 rooms

        Courtyard room

26 square metres in the old house around the central courtyard. Teak ceiling, a high four-poster bed, a sit-out on the courtyard.

        Plus ₹2,000 or US$ 25 a night

      • 2 cottages

        Grove cottage

34 square metres, a laterite cottage in the coconut grove with its own verandah and a bath open to the sky behind a bamboo screen.

        Plus ₹4,500 or US$ 55 a night

Every room: cotton linen, a mosquito net, filtered water in a copper jug, a cotton robe, no television. Wi-Fi works in the reading room and on the verandah, so the rooms stay quiet.

      കർക്കിടകം

      Karkidakam: the quiet month.

Karkidakam is the last month of the Malayalam calendar, from about mid-July to mid-August. It rains most days. In Kerala it has long been the month for rest, simple food and oil massage, and many families still cook marunnu kanji, a rice gruel with herbs, at home. In 2027 it runs from about 17 July to 16 August; we confirm the exact dates each spring.

      At Pathila

      Eight rooms open, not eleven.

We open only eight rooms, so the house is quieter. The Laghu routine runs at its usual price, with the season's kanji and pathila thoran on the menu. Rooms for Karkidakam book out early, so ask by April.
